An app that analyzes Tweets to see how hetero you or your friends are. Produced for the Stockholm Pride festival. Weird. I don’t even get a score for some reason.
Photo Tagger is a new FB app that does all of your tagging for you. It uses facial recognition software to scan all your photos for you and your friends and then assigns tags accordingly. Everyone hates the tagging process, but everyone wants to share photos and be tagged. Nerdy technology FTW. I especially love their magical use of stock photography on the site.
Two friends from Somerset England thought it would be a good idea to start a group on Facebook called “The Lying Down Game.” The game challenges anyone to create the weirdest, most public, or largest group of people lying face down – and then snap a picture to be posted on Facebook. Rules for the game are few and simple: the subject must be lying straight, with palms against his or her sides and toes pointing towards the ground. The more public, the better. The stranger the place, the better. The more people involved, the better. So far there are 34,000 members and around 7,500 photos.
Al Gore, Alice Waters, Tony Hawk and a bunch of other local experts were invited to map out their favorite places on Google Maps. The lists are interesting and you can explore by person or city. Of course, I immediately wanted to add my own list of favorite places. It’s mostly food and antique stores, naturally. Check it out.
Facebook just launched a few new features to improve their ad program. Good for business and probably good for people too.
1. Homepage video ad overlay
Bigger screen = better.
2. Connection Targeting
Nerdy, yes. But great CRM tool. Now you can target people who are fans of your page, members of your group, users of your application or attendees of your event.
3. Birthday Targeting
I hope companies start using this. Then I could get presents on my Birthday.
So, why is this happening? Well, 1. a lot of them are just funny. And 2. Most of these cropped up on Tumblr. Tumblr makes it way easy to create these sites. And, the Tumblr audience is a little wittier, a little dittier and a little less PC than the rest of the Internet world. Quancast research shows Tumblr users are mostly young guys into humor, politics, science, men, fashion, and teens. No surprise that some of the top Tumblr blogs are: indieporn.tumblr.com, 69.tumblr.com, lookatthisfuckinghipster.tumblr.com and guyswithiphones.com. Hmmm.
Drag and drop food onto the children’s’ plates to help combat child poverty in Dusseldorf. With every schnitzel, cheese sandwich or curd dessert you drop on their plate, the website adds more to your donation. Very well done. A Gold Lion winner at Cannes. Check it out here.
Starbucks, “Share a pint of ice cream” FB app
Starbucks created this Facebook app to give away free pints of their ice cream. Users download the app, then send a gift (coupon for a free pint of ice cream) to their friends. Each hour, Starbucks offers 800 coupons so people have to act fast. The beauty is all of these gifts generate news stories, and Starbucks understood that 1) everybody wants free shit, 2) people give to get. So of course these coupons are going super quick. You can’t buy those kind of impressions from a straight media buy. Download the app here. (more…)
